Answer: My role within the group during the process Advocacy is the process by which an individual or group aims to influence the decisions within the social, political, economic framework. Advocacy can be done by setting up SMART goals, creating strategy, using social media, clear communication, involving the policymakers, getting funds, building coalitions and organizing communities. I was the student representative in the group who had to manage the group as well as be the spokesperson. The role I had to play was that of a leader who had to take into consideration all the activities. Out of all the seven metaphors of Fuda, I had used the snowball approach. This approach refers to the responsibility that drives the change effort forward. It starts with the leader and the momentum is built when others join along in the journey. In the given scenario, I as the team representative of the campaign, flicker fest, helped my class to gain momentum as it is dependent upon getting a significant mass of leaders on the journey. This approach does not allow those individuals who are not committed and a positive and constructive leadership is implanted in the system and structural framework of the organization (1). The approach of snowball becomes impossible to stop at this crucial point. By following this approach, I had facilitated effective processes with my classmates which were beneficial in fostering their development. It even helped in binding together talent and diversity and created a suitable environment where my team could contribute. For developing the flicker fest campaign, I had to look over all the factors including the regular operations and the role to be played by each member of my class. I had to coordinate with all the members of my class. I had to manage the budget for the campaign which is considered as the most essential function while being the leader of advocacy campaign (2). While managing the campaign budget, my classmate also gained momentum due to the snowball approach where I had showcased my organizational skills, keeping myself level- headed portrayed good interpersonal skills so that there is no scope of miscommunication and I was not afraid with the issue of raising money. As it was only a small advocacy campaign, and being the team leader I had to fulfill the responsibility of other tasks too. Not only did I raise money but also made sure that the fund is responsible for achieving the targets. I had tagged my team along with by using Fudas approach and it became effective because the videos that were shown in the campaign demanded votes from the students present there. The two best videos that got the maximum number of votes were the Distracted Walking and Suicide in Young Adults. I had arranged for an interactive session at the end of each video and the participation of the students to answer the questions with total zeal and enthusiast proved that my role as a leader were effective in the success of the campaign (3). My role had a great influence on the development of the campaign and it was proved by the energetic participation on the part of team members. This fact is proved because while the videos were shown there was complete silence inside the hall and everybody had their attentive glances towards the screen. This was also proved when I had seen most of the hands in the air as they were geared up about the discussion that will follow the video watching session. Being the team leader of this flicker fest campaign, I had acquired different knowledge and skills which were not present within me. My role as a leader helped me to increase productivity of my class which will be beneficial for me when I will be the leader in an organization in the future. My leadership skills were honed in this campaign which will be an added advantage in my future career to extract the best from my employees (4). With the right application of consistent leadership I will be able to treasure the assets of my organization. This flicker fest campaign was an actual practice for me before entering into the workplace as a future leader. I had learned to motivate and encourage my classmates to come forward in participating in this outstanding activity which will be helpful for them. This skill acquired will help me to push my employees in the future role as a leader without de- motivating them but involving them by an effective leadership style. I have learnt from this flicker fest campaign that only the participation of team is not enough for an effective leadership strategy (5). For my future career as a leader I will have to get feedback from my employees either in an oral or written form. There will be a difference in the leadership style portrayed in flicker fest campaign with that of my future role as a leader in an organization. This is because being a leader of the known people in an accustomed environment is easy than to lead a team in a new situation with a new group of people from different backgrounds. Being the leader among the peer group is easy because it is quite obvious that they will like their friend is a leader and will not pose many hurdles in his way of providing leadership. But things are quite different when it comes to bigger scenario such as workplace. In an organization, there is a high scope that I might not be regarded as the best leader by my team members and they can do a lot of things to raise challenge in my way. Therefore, I will have to tactfully deal with such situation and bring a soft approach in my leadership style. I will have to take care of the fact that if my team goes against me it will be difficult for me to survive in the organization. So, I will have to maintain a good relationship with my employees by using my strong oration and motivational skills which will persuade them to do develop their career for the benefit of the organization (6). Overall campaign developed by my group My campaign was better than other campaigns of flicker fest as the videos that were shown to the members were relevant and applicable to every youths life. The two best videos were relatable to most of the young peoples life. The video that was elected as the best among the lot centered on the extreme level of involvement of the youth with their mobile devices so much that they do not care about their surroundings. 50% of the deaths of pedestrians are caused due to fidgeting with their mobile phones while walking down the street. Texting, calling and wearing headphones have contributed to 59% of injuries on road. All the details showed on the video are surveyed and much associated with the contemporary life of young people. The other campaigns did not show such details which made this one unique among others (7). The other video on the suicidal attempts of the youth was also associated with the life of teenagers and young adults. Depression has spread like a contagious disease among the youth nowadays and they have negligible tolerance towards any kind of situation. These have made them choose the path of sacrificing their lives as they think it to be the easiest solution than to face the problem. The video has also focused on the life of a young individual who had sacrificed her life because of not getting importance or not being valued by friends and family. This video deserve to get the second best prize as it will be effective enough to this generation and they will not take such drastic decision in a haste. I think the strength of the campaign lied on the topics selected for the video which helped in attaining much participation from the members present there. The topics were selected in such a way that they were relevant to the current scenario of the surrounding world. The participation and engagement of the members in the session were the achievement of the campaign and my success as a leader (8). The question- answer round at the end of each video solved the query on identification of stakeholders, target of the campaign, assessment of the campaign, strategy and finally the objective of the campaign. The reflection was used in an active process in this particular situation where I, as the campaign leader, interrogated my learning experience for creating a clear and constructive meaning to attain my future goal as the team leader of an organization. To mention about the weakness in my campaign, I would say that there was a lack of variety in the subjects covered in the campaign. The videos that were shown centered on similar kind of subjects regarding health and online activities (9). There was a scope to involve other subjects too which would help the students to do better in their career such as tips for interview, workplace culture or family values, differentiating between personal and professional life. These were considered as weakness in the campaign when one of the members came to me to speak about these topics. After getting his feedback I gave it a thought and understood that he has brought up a good point. I realized that if I could have exchanged certain topics then the participants would be encouraged to join such sessions in the future. Therefore, it is a necessity to gain feedback from the participants which will take care of their needs and wants from the campaign. Both these examples provided with the strengths and weaknesses of the campaign are a proof to show that although the campaign was successful but it could have been better. If I get the chance to lead such campaigns in the future I will definitely look into some major changes required for the effectiveness of the future campaign. First and foremost, I will arrange for feedback forms for the participating members which will contain their valuable opinion about the session. Those opinions and remarks will help me to arrange for a better campaign one after another. This will help me to develop my leadership skills and also become a favorite among the group. The primary role of a leader is to be gladly accepted by his team members (10). Another important change that I will implement in the future campaign is to arrange a suggestion box to be filled by the members two months before the event. This will help me to gauge the demand of the group members and if I can conduct the campaign according to their wish, it will be a grand success. If I get suggestions from the group members it will take less time thinking about innovative topics on my own. As the leader of the team I have to take care of numerous other activities so this will be beneficial in giving time to my other activities (11). I will also invite the family of the group members because there are certain topics which if attended by the whole family will have a better impact on the individual rather than watching alone. This will create an aura of mutual understanding between the members and their family to bridge the gap in age and generation. In addition to showing videos, I will also encourage the group members to perform any play or a game or a discussion or any kind of activity related to the topic of the campaign. In this way, the campaign will be more effective as it will provide a two way communication; one in receiving the message and the other by expressing the knowledge gained (12). Reference Conway PH.
